sunday angel and i were getting ready to run some errands. i had on a t-shirt and jeans and when i walked out of my room this was the dialog…

“mrs. jess you look like a teenager.”

“being cool is a tough job, but someone has to do it.”

“i didn’t say you looked cool, i said you looked like a teenager.”

i was speechless…

it was angel’s turn to pray last night. when she finished she said she prayed the wrong thing and needed to go back and fix it. she meant to pray that it would rain while she was at school so they could play four corners at recess, but she prayed that it would rain after school. i love that she prays for that kind of stuff. anyway, i told her she didn’t have to worry about going back to fix it because God knew what she meant. “how will He know if i don’t tell Him?”

“well, He knows your heart and your thoughts.”

”so i don’t have to pray?”

there i was trying to explain that prayer is really more for us than for God. in her mind our prayers tell God what to do. not in a bossy way, but in a give our opinion kind of way. i told her that we would have to revisit the subject when my tooth wasn’t hurting so bad that i can’t think straight (i got a crown yesterday… boo). she was ok with that and went right to sleep.

first thing this morning she wanted to know if my tooth was better so we could talk about praying. i was rushing to get out the door so i assured her we would talk about it tonight. so i have to try to explain prayer to an 8 year old. believe me she won’t forget about it. she just asks questions that are so dang hard to answer when you’re talking to an adult much less trying to explain it in terms she can understand. shoot, i don’t understand it sometimes…

things we are praying for…

  • that God would continue to grow and protect our marriage
  • that angel’s heart would be protected from false hopes of going home soon.
  • that christal, angel’s sister, can join us sooner rather than later.
  • as we enter the holiday season we want to be responsible with opportunity to teach the girls what it means to be thankful and what Christmas is really about.

there have been several things that i have been meaning to post and have been waiting to do so until i can get pictures up. i don’t want to forget them so i’ll go back and add the pictures…

1. we carved pumpkins on monday, october 27th. as are so many things, this was a first for angel. we went all out. matt lit a fire, i made apple cider and we carved masterpieces. angel had so much fun. after she was tucked into bed, when i was getting ready to turn out the light she said, “mrs. jess, God and Jesus must really love me.” i assured her that it’s true and asked what brought that up. “because this was the bestest night ever. i think they made you plan this for me because they love me so much.” what do you say to that? i went to bed feeling good about creating a memory for angel, but the best part is that she attaches how much God loves her to that memory.

2. our student and kids ministries threw a princess party and it was at our house. angel was able to show other girls HER room, where the bathroom is, etc. she took some ownership in our home and it made me happy. she was comfortable, happy, kind, sharing and just plain lovely to the guests we had. the whole night was great and there were little girls that left knowing that their Father in heaven is the King and because of that their identity is heirs to His kingdom. it was beautiful.

3. we went to a halloweenie roast for halloween. angel wanted to be a black, glittery, ballerina cat. and that she was. she had a great time and didn’t want to leave. i love that she feels like a part of our family and friends. it’s just cool.

4. sunday night was angels big debut! my pastor, josh, had angel come up on the stage to help out with one of his points. apparently they worked out the details before the service because she was running around telling anyone that would listen that mr. josh wanted her to come up on stage. she loved it. she is still talking about it. in her personal opinion last weekend was the best weekend ever… the halloweenieroast, the princess party and wrap it up with being on stage at church. life couldn’t get any better.

each of these things reminds me of “how much God and Jesus love me”. He has so beautifully  integrated angel into every aspect of our lives and no matter what happens she will forever be changed by His love for her… even if it is shown by carving pumpkins. :)
